Visiting Maple Ave and University High School has really changed my viewed of teaching. I must admit I was feeling hesitant about my career options in my life. My career options were social worker or teacher. At first, I was scared and nervous because my biggest fear in the classroom is what if I cannot get through one student. Is my purpose to become a teacher? I am sure that is everyone’s fear, but it was something that was bothering me constantly. Then, I received the opportunity to visit these two schools and came to realize that I can make a difference in my students’ lives. It is my purpose in life to be in the classroom and show my students “The wonder world of Education.”
I came to realize it will take determination and hard work, but it will be something that I worked hard to bring my students to where they belong. I enjoyed this experience. Comparing my experience visiting an urban setting and growing up in a suburban setting, I enjoyed my experience more in an urban setting. Observing each school, the students are giving amounts of different opportunities such as clubs, internships, and other variety options. I can only speak for my high school, but we did not receive these opportunities. When most people hear that you went to the school in suburbs, it is not what it seems to be. I believe the Urban Schools are willing to make a difference for their students and once again this experience has given me a different outlook in making a difference in my students’ lives.

You are right and I'm with you on this one when you say that it is not what you exspected. For me... it had partly to do with the media's interpretation and the discourse that many of the teachers I have met in the past have had. They were all negative. I didn't get a chance to visit the schools you went to, but I did have a chance to visit three other schools and my perception was totaly changed on what a typical urban school setting looks like. The teachers were all passionate for what they were teaching and the students were all ready to learn. This of course contradicts most of the media's representation of the urban school. I'm glad we had a chance to see something different that contradicts this negative perception. Don't worry I'm sure you will reach students in your own special ways. Good Luck!
I am so glad to hear that you feel inspired by your experience at the schools, ready to take on the challenges in teaching to be there for the children and make a difference in their lives. It's amazing how much power we hold as educators, isn't it? Just know how you can use that for so much good...and these students need you!
And, tagging onto Lucrative Thoughts, I did feel that we got the opportunity to see some great teaching going on in these schools. However, in a couple classrooms I saw teachers that did not seem too happy. There could be a variety of personal or situational factors involved, but i suppose the realization that just like anywhere else there are teachers going through personal/emotional situations, just like the students may be. Can a teacher be 100% with it 100% of the time? So it is also difficult to gage a teacher on 15 minutes of observation.
Awww. I'm glad that this experience has really inspired you!! We will hold a lot of power in our hands when we become teachers. I agree with Eve. I saw a couple of teachers that did not look too happy. But I mean I really don't think a person can be always 100% everyday in their life. Although I think its important to forget the crap thats bringing you down a lot of the time and move on. As a teacher you can't show yourself being frustrated. You have to be on your toes and ready for anything every day of school. Its a tough occupation and half assing it won't just cut it. Excuse my language. :)
I'm completely understand your hesitant --- must cross my mind a dozen times in a day! What we all need is lots of patience and drive. We have 180 days to make a difference to the students -- it can be done.
As one of the teachers from U school said --- you need to be a reflective teacher. Each day take a look at what you've done; what worked, what didn't, why didn't it work. Every day is a new day to get it right.
I think one of the students said that we should 'smile' -- I think they really just want us to care about them and about what we do. Sounds like you are already there!!
I can agree with you about being unsure of your career choice. Choosing a career is an extremely tough thing to do. I feel the more you do it, the better you will get. The experience of the UEI was an interesting one. As I left the UEI, I felt as if some of the schools gave more opportunity than the HS I attended. After the final day, I wanted to go back in time and attend one of the magnet HS's.
